Helping your child sleep when dads away

Just spending a week at my mums while my husband is helping take care of his mum.  My youngest son Alex (20 months) who is not well spent hours SCREAMING when we tried to put him to bed.  After dosing him up with panadol and ear numbing medicine, giving him a bath, putting the T.V. on etc he was still screaming.  I gave my husband a ring and told him to sing to Alex over the phone.  A few minutes later he was asleep!
He woke up during the night and I just put the phone back next to his ear without ringing my husband and he went back to sleep.

Our holiday - Bellbrae Cottages, Lakes Entrance

A real Australian holiday means different things to different people.  We recently went on holidays to Bellbrae Cottages in Lakes Entrance, and found our version of it.

We spent four days staying at Bellbrae's Braeview residence with my brother Robbie, his wife Anna and their little girl Melissa aswell as Anna's brother Johnny and his girlfriend Linda.  During our stay there we had breakfasts on the verandah with Kookaburras watching, swam in the pool, played tennis, basketball, table tennis and more.  In the evening we got to cook Damper and marshmallows on the bonfire.

We also played mini-golf, went down a 60 metre cave, went fishing, went to the beach and went paddle-boating.

Thanks to the staff at Bellbrae for a lovely holiday.

Baby Blog - natural help for teething

These days people are so quick to use pain relief for thier babies when they are teething.  In one of my previous blogs I named a few different types of pain relief but I must say it's best to use those as a last resort.

If your baby seems to be in pain due to teething try some ice-poles made with juice.  Give them lot's of hugs and a favourite toy or blanket and let them do what makes them happy (some babies prefer to lie on the floor than be held).  You can also calm them down with massage or a bath.

If you are finding that your baby is still not settling after trying these methods then don't be afraid to use pain relief.  If you think that they are better off with out it ask yourself what you'd do if you had a toothache.

Middle ear infections and Grommets in children

My eldest son had alot of middle ear infections and was constantly on antibiotics. I assumed that everytime he finished a course of antibiotics the problem was fixed.  It wasn't until I noticed he was making a habit out of saying "what?" after everything I said and wasn't talking very clearly that I thought something was still not right.

I got a referral to see a paediatrician who had a look inside Patrick's ears.  He told me that his ears were full of thick fluid that couldn't drain.  He asked me to take Patrick to having his hearing tested and found out he had significant hearing loss.

I booked him into the Royal Children's Hospital to have his ears drained and have Grommits (tiny tubes) surgically inserted into his ears.   We were told that it could take a year to have the surgery as a public patient so we decided to book him in as a private patient.

A week or so later we took him in and it took only about  10 minutes under general anaesthetic to have them inserted and we left the hospital about an hour after the surgery.  He was able to go back to kinder the following day.

The difference we have seen in Patrick since has been amazing.  He stopped asking "what?" all the time and his speech improved.  Because it took so long to diagnose he ended up repeating kinder as he didn't have a proper start but he has caught up now.

I have included a couple of photos.  One is him after the surgery to show you how quickly kids recover and the other shows the smile on his face as he can hear his dads iRiver  :)
